George IV Solid Silver Vinaigrette – Thomas Shaw 1829

This lovely Silver Vinaigrette was made by Thomas Shaw in 1829. In superb condition with little or no wear, the casing is decorated on the lid with a basket weave design with a blank cartouche and to the base with a bright cut geometric pattern surrounding a basket weave panel. The inside grill is pierced with a superb pierced floral design. The inside gilt is still vibrant, the box closes well and all hallmarks are present and clear.

This is a delightful example in excellent condition and would make a wonderful gift or would add to anyone's collection.

(Vinaigrettes, popular from the late 18th century through to the end of the 19th century, were small containers used for holding various aromatic substances, usually dissolved in vinegar. A tiny piece of sponge, soaked in the liquid, was contained beneath a grill or perforated cover. Ladies used to carry a vinaigrette with them to combat the aroma from the waste products common in cities. Likewise, the practice of wearing tight corsets also regularly caused woman to faint, requiring the need to carry smelling salts. These little boxes were often exchanged between lovers as tokens of affections.)
