Gents 1940s Smiths wrist watch for Thomas Russell.

By the 1940s, Thomas Russell were no longer manufacturing watches but purely buying them in and retailing them. This particular watch was bought in from Smiths of Cheltenham and has a 15-jewel hand-winding movement, made in England, which is working nicely.

The 9 carat gold case is in lovely condition and the haunched lugs are a particularly handsome feature. The side of the case has 9 carat hallmarks. We would usually expect to see hallmarks and a maker's mark inside the case back but this case back has no marks at all which suggests it somehow bypassed the stamping process... there is absolutely no evidence that marks have been polished out or removed as the case back is still a good thickness and there is no scar damage. For peace of mind, the case back has been tested for 9 carat gold and the results were positive.

The case is in good condition, just a slight indentation to the back.

The lens is in good condition too

The signed dial has its original hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers. There is some marking to the dial as shown in the photos.

A new leather strap has been fitted.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
