Description

A fine quality inlaid mahogany pedestal desk by the renowned cabinet makers Edwards and Roberts of London. Of excellent construction in solid mahogany with attractive mahogany veneers. The desk is decorated throughout with inlaid satinwood stringing and banding. The break-fronted rectangular top is fitted with a sumptuous black leather writing surface, decorated with gilt tooling. There is an arrangement of one long central drawer flanked by two sets of 4 shorter graduated drawers. All drawers are fitted with their original brass swan-neck handles. The pedestals are of stylish, tapering form and they stand on elegant splayed legs. This desk is finished to the reverse so could be free-standing within a room if desired. We have had it sympathetically repolished to a very high standard.

Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp. Edwards & Roberts specialized in marquetry, inlay and ormolu.
