Kay & Co pocket watch and chain.

The watch has a Swiss stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover (which has a little “ding”).

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the loop. The case is gold plated and was made in England by the Dennison Watch Case Company, a prolific case manufacturer who supplied various watch makers. The case is in good condition, just a few light scratches to the back but nothing too serious.

The watch glass is in good condition.

The dial is in lovely condition and has blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track. The dial is signed with the name Kay & Co, Worcester, the original retailer of the watch.

William Kay set up Kays of Worcester in 1890. Customers bought items from handbills in a folder and initially the goods on offer were limited to jewellery, watches, clocks and household items. Eventually William’s son Jack took over the running of the business. The company continued to expand and trade successfully, becoming one of Worcester’s largest employers.

The watch comes with a double albert, with each chain measuring 20cm long including the T-bar and the clasp.

The watch and chain will be sent in a new presentation box.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
