one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings with pierced crowns and surmounted by Maltese Crosses, queens with Fleur de Lys, bishops as open mitres, knights as horses' heads with manes and flaring nostrils, rooks as raised turrets, pawns with reeded ball finials, the base of the king stamped: CALVERT MAKER 189 FLEET STRt LONDON, in a period mahogany box with a sliding lid
