Description

A huge example (measuring 20 1/2" x 8 1/2" x 16" tall) and a very fine casting of "Whippet", after the original by animalier sculptor Arthur Waagen (German, 1833-1898), this work likely cast during the last quarter of the 19th Century. The antique bronze sculpture is signed on the base by impression. This is one of Waagen's most famous and recognizable works.

I have seen it in the past with various finishes, patinated bronze, gilded etc. This is silver over polished bronze, her muscular body highlighted by the bronze showing through the silver plating creating a wonderful aged two-tone finish.

The naturalistic base is mounted with a cast twig, foliage and large Moth, she appears to be chasing the Moth with her turned head. Around her neck there is a thick collar with buckle.
