A beautiful depiction of French village life in the 19th Century by Eugène Damas (1844-1899) and artist particularly renowned for his country scenes.
The son of a blacksmith, Eugene Damas started his studies at the Academie of Fine Arts in Valenciennes. From 1862-1865, he studied with Charles-Gustave Housez, then with the great Alexandre Cabanel in Paris. He exhibits for the first time in 1879, at the Salon des Champs-Elysées. Feeling strongly for his native region, he co-founded the Artistic Union of the Ardennes,
Numerous works by the artist can be found in the Museum of the Ardennes at Charleville-Mézieres, but also in the Fine Art Museums of Rouen and Langres.
Our oil on canvas, painted circa 1880, shows a peasant woman laying out her washing to dry. It is signed at the lower right and measures 38 x 55 cm. The overall framed size is 50 x 68 cm.
