Antique 19th Century Brass Bar Limb Microscope

19th century
Description

Fine example of a mid 19th Century brass Bar-Limb microscope in a fitted wooden case, complete with an eyepiece lens and objective lens. The microscope is made of lacquered brass. It tilts, has a rack and pinion main focus and additional fine focus on the back of the main tube. It has an unusual circular stage with a moveable circular slide holder that enables the slide to be fully moved around the stage using the two small arms. Below the stage is a large adjustable mirror for directing the light.

The microscope is unsigned with no indication of a maker but the craftsmanship is superb. It comes with a brass objective lens in its original lens case and a good quality eyepiece lens.

The microscope comes in its original fitted case with sections to hold the lenses. There is also a pull out drawer for holding a few slides although the piece of wood is slightly loose. The box is good quality with a brass carrying handle and a nice aged patina. There are some general signs of age and light marks and an old split in the base the microscope stands on but overall it displays very nicely.

The microscope measures approximately 14" tall when set up. The box is a compact 10" high X 7" wide X 6 1/2" deep.

It appears to be in good working order and I have set it up and tested it with a few old slides. I'm sure the lenses would benefit from a clean and there are a few small specks of dirt but they produce a clear and bright image all the same and the microscope was easy to focus. Although in working order it is really being sold as a decorative / collectors item rather than an accurate scientific instrument.

The microscope is in good condition for its age and the brass has been lightly cleaned and polished. It has been used and will have normal signs of wear so please don't expect it to be like new. There are areas of tarnishing where it has been handled and some general signs of age and use. There are some small knocks and light scratches on the base but nothing detrimental.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions at all please ask. Nationwide delivery £10.
