A Magnificent 30 Day Biedermeier Grande Sonnerie Vienna Regulator Wall Clock, Circa 1855

19th century
Description

An impressive burr elm Biedermeier Viennese Regulator wall clock, dating circa 1855.

The outstanding case with a shaped moulded top surmounted with the delicately carved original pediment, beneath an applied gilded royal crest for the house of Habsburg, presumably indicating the clock was originally from a royal property.

The shaped and glazed door flanked with excellent quality applied matching carvings and the finest quality burled veneers, glazed sides with boxwood stringing around the apertures. The case interior veneered with the beautifully figured burled elm wood with a silvered beat scale. The moulded and shaped base terminating with the original delicately carved base decoration. The original lock to the door.

The 8" diameter two piece enamelled dial with Roman numerals, surrounded by an inner and outer polished brass bezel.

The outstanding quality, triple plated 30 day duration, Grande Sonnerie three train movement of the highest quality striking on two blued steel curled gongs, with maintaining power and deadbeat escapement. Strike silent facility.

The video clip shows the movement striking at 3 o clock, this is denoted by 4 chimes for the hour and a further 3 chimes for the indicated hour, the remaining sequence would be 1 chime at quarter past plus the indicated hours, 2 chimes at half past and the indicated hours and so on.

Three large polished brass cased weights, with ornate spoked pulleys, polished brass bob pendulum (front and back) with ebonised wooden rod, incorporating decorative faux mercury compensated glass tubes and ornate gilded and engraved shaped mounts - very unusual.

Finely fretted blued steel hands of the highest qualtity. Original bone handled winding key.

A truly exceptional clock and certainly one of the finest examples we have seen from the biedermeier period.

The combination of the elegant proportions and beautiful use of the finest veneers, complemented by a superb one month duration movement and ornate pendulum make this a very special and rare clock.

The clock in fine original condition with the movement fully restored.

This type of Viennese regulator wall clock were entirely hand made by a time served master clockmaker and were only made for the most discerning customers and took many months to complete individually.

All of our clocks have been sympathetically restored and have been expertly vetted for originality and good working order. All clocks purchased from us are guaranteed for twelve months. All of our clock movements are restored by our horologist who works exclusively for us.

Our horologist is a Fellow of the British Horological Institute (FBHI), having 35 years of full time professional engagement in the repair & restoration of clocks, watches, music boxes & barometers. He was the recipient of the 1977 Worshipful Company of Clockmakers Bronze Medal
