Antique Regency Pope Joan Card Game Wheel

19th century
Description

Fine example of a hand made turned wood Pope Joan game wheel, dating from the early 19th century. The wood looks like it could be Sycamore. 'Pope Joan' is a card game that dates back as early as the 1700s. This segmented turntable holds the players' counters or 'bets'. It has a lidded pot in the centre surrounded by 8 segments, each with a different scene and the words 'Game', 'Matrimony' and 'Intrigue' around the egde. The wheel is set on a round base and spins around when turned.

The wheel is in good condition for its age with the original hand painted decoration still bright and vibrant. It has been well used over the years and as to be expected there are small patches of paint loss and rubbing and some general small scuffs and marks here and there picked up through use. However there is no major damage to report and nothing that detracts from its overall look which is one of age and history. It is possible that there has been a recent repair to the wooden pin that holds the wheel to the base, visible from underneath as it looks more modern than the base but it isn't at all detrimental and the top rotates well on the base.

Please have a good look at the photos for the best description and if you have any questions please ask. Nationwide delivery £10.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
