Description

Stunning early 19th.c. biedermeier escritoire or writing bureau c.1820. Open the fall to reveal a good sized desk surface (height 29") with original leather writing surface and a beautiful birch lined interior. With bookshelf and several small drawers plus a couple of secret compartments held closed with a hidden spring catch. Single long drawer above and a two door cupboard in the base, also birch lined and fitted with shelves and another lockable drawer. Original grey marble top with moulded edge. Typical of the biedermeier style applied decoration is forgoed in favour of the timbers used. In this case superbly figured yew wood veneers which are laid in a symmetrical pattern across the front and sides. Fabulous quality, note the remarkable oversized brass locks and unusual pattern keys for security. Oak drawer linings and back panels. Superb colour and condition, cleaned and polished in our workshops.
