1936 Rolex Stainless Steel

1920 - 1940
Description

A 1936 stainless steel Rolex wristwatch. A 'cushion' style case with elegant curves and champfered edges. An off white dial with and outer minute track following the lines of the case. Case inner marked 'Rolex 25 Records Universels' and stamped with SAR and RM logos. A 15 jewel manual wind Rolex Prima mechanism. Case back stamped with serial number and case reference 2008. The watch bears an engraving of 'AHB 1936' to the case back.

This watch reputedly belonged to Alfred Hamilton Barr JR, the first director of The Museum of Modern Art, New York. It was given to him as a birthday present from Mrs Simon Guggenheim on the opening of a New York exhibition of 'Cubism & Abstract Art' in 1936.
