A Charming English Naive Family Group Portrait, circa 1790

watercolour and pencil on paper, period ‘ebonised’ reeded frame (with later Victorian twisted gilt-wood slip), period glass.

Note: Charming family group from the last years of the eighteenth century. The boys (and father) on the right are holding various things representative or symbolic of their trades. So from right to left: Father (walking stick), coachmen (whip or crop), glovier (pair of gloves), gunsmith or gamekeeper (shotgun), tailor (shears), scholar (paper). The girls (and wife) on the left are holding flowers, presumably symbolic; the girl third from the left is holding a drooping flower.
