George III mahogany linen press

This George III mahogany linen press was made circa 1810.

This linen press is made in the usual 2 sections. The top section consisting of a 2-door cupboard fitted with sliding trays. It also has a hinging rail fitted, so that you can store the trays and use the press as a hanging robe.

The doors of the top panels are in well selected figured mahogany cross-banded and with arched drop corners. Above the doors is the flared cornice with a finely carved Greek key pattern design running around.

The base section consists of a chest of drawers, with a pair of small drawers across the top and a further pair of full width graduated drawers below. It has the unusual banding that drops down in a semi-circle below each of the escutcheons. The drawers are lined in fine oak.

This stands on straight bracket feet.

The drawers have antique brass swan neck handles but are not original, it would have had in its lifetime 2 or 3 sets of handles that hanged with the fashion of the day, including turned wooden knob handles, the evidence of which can still be seen on close inspection on the 2 small drawers.
