Magnificent Late Renaissance Italian Walut Cassone

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Mersham Manor Antiques

-Welcome to Mersham Manor Antiques-

An outstanding Italian renaissance 17th century carved walnut cassone ( marriage chest ) of superior quality and craftsmanship.

The five panelled front is profusely carved in beautiful cartouche and figural designs, surrounded by naturalistic floral leaf-and-berry designs.

The carving is of outstanding quality and has an incredible warmth and patina to the walnut.

The incredible carving continues to the base, where the chest is supported by two amazing dragons, possibly representing Thyrus, a ferocious dragon in Italian folklore that besieged Terni in the middle ages. These are truly wonderful, having quite sinister but also rather cheeky faces, with beautifully carved wings and arched necks, clinging to the base with large clawed feet.

The front of the chest has a drop-front which opens to reveal three central drawers flanked by shelved storage space. With working lock and key.

The cassone has been adapted / altered in the 19th century, the drop-front has been created in the 19th century as the top would have originally lifted. The wood at back of the chest and some internally has been replaced, shown in the pictures. Also the drawers internally have been added in the 19th century. In the Victorian era it was quite usual for early pieces of furniture to be altered / adapted for different uses.

Overall a simply stunning piece of furniture with a great presence.

In excellent condition, expected signs of age.
