Description

A very attractive and well proportioned insect collectors cabinet by j.thorne of 1 gernon road, london. Circa 1870.

Thorne is not an instantly recognisable cabinet maker's name but the standard of his work is good. Gernon road is placed roughly between whitechapel and stratford in east london. At the time of manufacture this was a centre of cabinet making for great britain. The makers name is inset in a recessed cartouche to the inside of the right door and is of gilded lettering on a burgundy leather background. The name is protected behind framed glass. (gardner of oxford street also used this method of naming for their cabinets).

The cabinet is in good condition. Some of the drawers have experienced opening of grain to the bases which has been effectively repaired. All the drawers have closely fitted glazed frames to protect and display that held within. This cabinet has imperial depth drawers. It's potential uses are multiple for the protection and display of collectables. All the drawers are base lined with cork and papered over. Re-papering is an option which I am happy to undertake. Please discuss.
