Albert Friedrich Schröder was a genre and figurative painter who was born on November 3, 1854 in Dresden, Germany. Schröder was taught by the famous Belgian painters Michel Marie Charles Verlat (1824-1890), director of the Weimar Academy of Arts and Professor Ferdinand Wilhelm Pauwels (1830-1904) who worked at the Weimar Art School. After graduating, he worked in Munich and Dresden where he began to develop his style and specialise in genre and historical scenes. He also worked as an illustrator.
Many of his paintings included portraits of cavaliers and were signed and inscribed with the city where they were painted. Schröder’s works are a strong testament to his artistic abilities and passion for historical subjects. He invests as much attention to the objects in the background as the expressions on his figure’s faces and uses chiaroscuro effects to illuminate his figures. In this painting, his quest for historical accuracy is not only illustrated by the costume of the sitter but also in the collection of objects which include the metal lidded ale jug and Flintlock tinder lighter. Schröder died in Dresden in 1939. Today, many of his works can be found in private collections as well as at museums in Duisburg and Magdeburg, Germany.
Presentation: The work is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.
