As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912) Ivory Netsuke depicting Kadori Myojin, this scene depicts Kadori Myojin seated with his gourd, the Namazu slowly emerges from the gourd, In Japanese mythology the story is told that the Earthquake fish the Namazu is a large Catfish with a body that resembles an eel, it was thought to live underneath the Japanese islands ans cause Earthquakes by its movement, the God Kadori Myojin was thought to rub it with a gourd to help keep it quiet, artist signed underside in a two character signature that translates to read ''Miyagi Chokusai'', a great addition to your Japanese works of art collection.
