18thc Oil Portrait of an Aristocratic Gentleman European Painting of Exceptional Quality

18th century
Description

I am pleased to offer for sale this beautifully executed portrait of an aristocratic looking gentleman who has been superbly depicted in a russet brown coat, cream embroidered silk waistcoat beaded in gold woven thread.

He is painted with his right hand neatly tucked into his tunic, which was a common pose often seen in gentlemanly portraits of the 18th century era.

-

The sitter is portrayed with as a serious character of influence and his facial features convey a person of distinction, elements captured perfectly by the accomplished artist of this portrait.

-

The gentleman has noticeable piercing blue eyes which have been sharply rendered and his ‘half smile’ imbues the sitter with a warm character.

-

There is lovely impasto in the lace collar which is a pleasing touch as this is so often an element no longer present on paintings of this age as they have so often been flattened in the restoration process.

-

The artist has incorporated the sitter’s coat of arms in the portrait and the back of the canvas contains the following inscription and signature:

-

IDENTIFICATION of Artist & Sitter.

" Mr Christian August Helffrich b. March 10, 1747. G A Eger p (inxit)"

-

This possibly refers to Georg Adam Eger (1727-1808) who was a German Court painter, born in Murrhardt Germany.

-

The sitter has yet to be the subject of finer monograph, a task perhaps avoided by art historians due to the lack of any archive, notebooks or memoranda, which after research has not produced any further

information.
