Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1800s.
There are folding handles to the sides (these have been French polished over to keep bright and tarnish free, so opening the handles can be done but would break this seal).

The interior has been re-lined with hand-marbled paper, in keeping perfectly with the box. The lid interior is wonderful deep green crushed velvet with a decorative white metal (probably sterling silver but not tested) catch. There is an embossed leather letter file which is gold embossed with the retailer:

" J Corfield (Late Elvey) / Real Manufacturer To The Royal Family. / No. 10 Mount St. Gro Sq. From New Bond Street".
Wonderful pedigree and would have been purchased by an aristocratic family all those years ago. The quality is further evident with double line brass inlay to the the interior edges. There is a superb Tompson security lock and complete with a working key.
Quite exceptional in wonderful condition, measuring 9 1/2" x 6 1/2" x 6 1/4" tall.
