Indian Silver Double Snuff Box. Trichinopoly or Tanjore, C. 1860.

Description

A fine, rare and heavy Indian double walled silver snuff box, Trichinopoly or Tanjore, South India, c. 1860. The double compartmented box, with chased decoration to the cover of, animals around a gopuram (part of a Tamil Nadu Hindu temple, found in Southern India), upon a ground of dense flowering plants. The sides with floral scroll work, terminating in a shell motif thumb piece to the cover.

Having a gilded interior, containing twin lidded compartments to hold snuff.

Weight - 290 grammes.

Length - 8.5 cm, 3 3/8”

Height - 2.5 cm, 1”.

Width - 6 cm, 2 3/8”.

Condition - Excellent. No damage. No repairs.

Trichinopoly is an area of South India, formerly administered by the British East India Company. It’s silver and goldsmith specialised in producing small, luxurious items. Along with similar items produced at nearby Tanjore, examples of such Colonial silver are scarce. This example, being particularly rare.
