Pair Victorian Staffordshire Porcelain Lion & Lioness Figures C.1840

19th century
Description

Lovely and unusual mid 19th century porcelain figures of a recumbent lion and lioness with her cub on moulded green bases to represent grassy mounds. Decorated in the round with a gilded band around the bottom of the front of the bases. Very finely detailed modelling and decoration. Illustrated in English Porcelain Animals by D.G. Rice, plate 31.

The lion measures 2 3/4" (7cm) high and the base is 4 1/4" (10.5cm) by 3" (7.5cm) wide. The lioness is 2 1/2" (6.5cm) high with a similar sized base. Condition is very good with no damage or restoration to the female. The male has a branched impact hairline running under the base, and part way up with his body. There is a fine hairline across the end of his tail and his front left leg has had a break and been neatly repaired. Again no restoration I can detect. Surface wear is very light; slight rubbing to the black enamel on their noses and the claws on the lioness' front feet.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
