George James Antiques has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
The underside is a masterpiece in itself! The high quality engine-turning to the base is protected from being rubbed and damaged owing to the raised border that the box rests on; consequently the engine-turning is perfect and this has also protected the fine crest to the centre of this base panel. Great weight and size, by probably the best box maker of the period. This piece has everything!
