Description

Fortunino Matania: an interesting PEN-AND-INK DRAWING by this famous Italian-born illustrator and artist.

Beautifully drawn and composed, it appears to depict a mediaeval scene of a soldier and his local indigenous 'scout' escaping on a grey stallion, from pursuing soldiers behind. Signed lower left. 20.5ins cx 19ins (52 x 48cms)

***Fortunino MATANIA was born in Naples in 1881. Initially working for his father as an illustrator, he became a war artist in the Great War. Afterwards, when he moved to England he found fame as an illustrator for the magazine "Britannia and Eve" and also designed a number of posters for English seaside resorts.
