Antique Mahogany Apothecary Cabinet

19th century
Description

Superb example of an early 19th Century mahogany apothecary case, complete with most of its original contents. The box itself is made from mahogany with a brass carrying handle, brass escutcheons and matching inset brass handles in the interior.

The doors open to reveal an arrangement of bottles inside the doors. The middle of the box is velvet backed and pulls down to reveal further bottles at the back of the box. Above the bottles is a drawer that contains a small set of brass scales with a pair of extra pans and two sets of original weights. There are also two spatulas and a pair of tweezers. The pull down section also has drawers on either side. On the right is a large drawer with the original glass pestle and mortar, three glass pots and a small metal grater. On the left hand side are two smaller drawers with sliding lids. One has a collection of original papers and notes and the other contains two blue glass bottle and two boxes of microscope circles - truly everything a travelling doctor would have needed in the 19th century!

Overall the condition of the box and contents are superb. Some of the smaller bottles are probably not original as they would have fitted exactly in the sections but for display purposes it looks superb. Some of the bottles are missing stoppers or have small chips around the tops but many still have their original paper labels. Any remaining liquids will have to be removed for posting unless buyer collects.

The mahogany box is strong and sturdy with a beautiful aged patina. There are general minor signs of age and use and a small split across the door but no major damages. It has been sympathetically re-polished and revived and the brass parts polished. I do not have a key for the box. Inside it is generally clean and tidy and the partitions are sturdy and in good condition and all the handles are original. The contents of the drawers are also in excellent condition with no damages to the glass beakers or pestle.

The best description certainly comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions at all please ask. Nationwide delivery £25.
