An Exceptional Silver Georgian Revival Tankard

1900 - 1920
Description

An exceptional silver Georgian revival full size tankard, dating from 1901. This handsome piece is of excellent quality, the silver being of a heavy gauge. The tankard is modelled in the Georgian revival style, a movement which became popular in the Edwardian period when style tastes moved away from the extravagant Victorian era, to the more simple lines of the 18th and early 19th centuries.

The body is decorated with an applied band which is echoed in the design of the rim and the base is stepped. The handle has a charming shaped kick to the bottom and the thumb grip is a figured scroll. The top is finished with a hinged domed lid. The interior retains and light wash of gilding and there is an unusual and interesting cat armorial to the front featuring crossed swords in the background. The underside of the tankard retains the inscription of 'G. Dimmer Southsea'. A superb quality piece, in fantastic condition. Dimensions below.
