Antique Victorian Silver Plated Wine Coaster/trolley

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: The Silver Cabinet

This is a fabulous example of a Victorian silver plated decanter wagon or wine trolley.

Apparently developed in the 1820''s, these carts or trolleys became popular as dining tables became bigger and were designed to carry decanters, not bottles, of wine. This example moves well - the wheels move freely and, whilst low, the handle is effective. The coasters are decorated with trailing vines and grapes and the central button carries the crest of the Ashburnham family: an ash tree coming out of a ducal crown with a second crown above the tree which is an earl''s crown. The family was awarded it''s earldom in 1730 and the title died out in 1924 through a lack of heirs. This coaster probably dates to around the 1860''s.

Dimensions:

Length: 48cm

Diameter of coasters: 13cm
