The early name for these table pieces was a "stand" or a "slider". The term "coaster" came into use in 1887 as the custom for ladies to 'withdraw' after dinner (hence the "withdrawing" ~ or Drawing ~ Room) whilst a bottle of port was 'coasted' around the table by the men who remained.
