Pair of Regency Papier Maché Wine Coasters

Description

A good PAIR of Regency period papier mache WINE COASTERS in excellent condition. Of tradtional design, they are decorated with gilded swags of vine leaves and grapes around the entire circumference. 5ins (12.8cms) diameter.

*** The early name for these table pieces was a "stand" or a "slider". The term "coaster" came into use in 1887 as the custom for ladies to 'withdraw' after dinner (hence the "withdrawing" ~ or Drawing ~ Room) whilst a bottle of port was 'coasted' around the table by the men who remained.
