George II Mahogany Fold Over Tea Table

18th century
Description

A very fine George II mahogany tea table in excellent and original condition. Level, sturdy and flat when open and closed on original brass hinges.

Made by hand in c. 1750. Minor marks and dents consistent with a well cared for piece of this age and with no breaks or damage or later timbers. A few old worm holes to oak lining of drawer but long since treated and dead. Handle is period and appears original with light wear consistent with age. No other handle marks our outlines present. Drawer is original and cockbeaded to drawer and frame with lap dovetails and opens and closes smoothly – of sound construction. Toes to foot are webbed and clawed and widely spaced on flattened balls, this feature, along with the construction of drawer and design of table indicate a date of c. 1750. Colour is rich and good, finish appears old and may be original with nice patina and some light wear to surfaces but not noticeable or unpleasant. Top is constructed from matching solid mahogany panels with curved crossbanded edge and original side fixed brass hinges. Top is flat and level and opens and closes smoothly without any looseness to the hinges. Gate leg action to rear leg is original and iin excellent working order and the table stands firm and solid when open and when closed. Carved flower and foliage to knees is ‘proud’ and original with nicely lapped tops with moulded edge detail.

A very good quality piece in excellent condition for age.

34 inches wide

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
