Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Napoleon III Empire style clock garniture typically features a three-piece set comprising a central mechanical clock and two matching flankers, such as candelabra or urns. Produced in late nineteenth-century France, these sets draw inspiration from classical antiquity, incorporating motifs like eagles, palmettes, and obelisks combined with rich materials such as Siena marble and gilt bronze.

French horologists and bronze founders commonly paired figured marble, such as yellow Siena or Belgian black marble, with finely cast ormolu (gilt bronze) or patinated bronze components. Clock dials were typically made from enamel or cast brass, with steel hands and brass clockwork mechanisms.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-chiseled bronze mounts, heavy marble bases with natural veining, and pendulum-driven movements stamped with French maker marks or serial numbers. Look for Roman numerals on the dial, precise chasing on gilt elements, and uniform patination consistent with age.

Position the garniture centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece or a formal sideboard to establish a focal point. The architectural form and metallic accents contrast well against muted modern backdrops or dark, moody painted walls in a library or dining room.

Dust marble surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid water or acidic cleaners that can etch the stone. Ormolu should be cleaned using a dry soft brush; water, chemical solvents, and abrasive metal polishes must be avoided as they strip the original gold gilding.
