Buren Silver Half Hunter Pocket Watch, 1919

Antique Buren silver half hunter pocket watch, 1919.

The watch has a stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the Buren name, and it is all protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch itself measures 49mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the outer covers for London (import mark) 1919, with an importer's mark for William Sparrow.

The Buren Watch Company was founded in 1898 when the London based company H Williamson Ltd acquired Fritz Stuer & Cie of Büren an der Aare in Switzerland. Williamson invested heavily in Büren, in part due to the excellent rail links. The official company name of Buren Watch Company came into force from 1916. Following the stock market crash, H Williamson Ltd had to close however a group of investors, from Switzerland and England, provided the financial backing to continue watch production in Switzerland, now under the name Uhrenfabrik Buren AG.

Buren was a very successful company and supplied watches for the British military, including of course one of the members of the Dirty Dozen WWW watches. The case is in good condition, just a couple of small indentations to the back. Originally both the front and back would have had engine turned detail but this has rubbed over the years, just from use.

The front cover has a small lens surrounded by enamel filled Roman numerals.

The winding crown pushes in to open the front cover. Inside there is an acrylic lens which is in good condition.

The dial is in good condition. It has the special half hunter hour hand so even when the front cover is closed, the hands can be distinguished between and the time read.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.
