Huge Joseph Farquharson R.A. Oil Painting

19th century
Description

Huge Joseph Farquharson R.A. Oil on canvas

A superb painting by this renown Scottish artist. Loch Duich Isle of Skye. A stunning work of a hillside over the loch with sheep in the foreground, figure by the shoreline. He travelled to this area every summer in the 1880s one of his favourite places to paint. This painting is in its original exhibition frame.

Painting size. 30" x 40" plus frame.

Provenance. Primarily owned and exhibited by Mr & Mrs Wills (The tobacco family). Exhibition no 79, original Aberdeen Museum labels verso.

Condition. Untouched no damage whatsoever. a few minor scuffs to some of the guiding on frame edges. Ready to hang, although would benefit from a light clean.

Farquharson mostly painted in a mobile studio at Finzean, the estate he inherited in Aberdeenshire. In order to depict sheep in his compositions, the painter commissioned plaster models from a local sculptor, William Grant of Monymusk (b 1832).

The fluid painterliness and natural effects of Farquharson's painting were developed and matured during the four winters (1880-1884) he spent studying in Carolus-Duran's studio in Paris, where he was a contemporary of John Singer Sargent, who in turn became a firm friend and admirer of the Scottish artist.

Sickert compared Farquharson's paintings favourably to those of Courbet, preferring the Scot's work: 'Farquharson's extraordinary virtuosity has been developed by experience but it arises certainly because he is thinking of telling his story... The subject is the very raison d'etre of the picture. Bloomsbury will perhaps tell you that it is wrong... Fortunately, the writ of Bloomsbury does not run to the North of Scotland' (W R Sickert, A Free House, London 1947, p. 204, first published in an article 'Snow Piece and Palette Knife', The Daily Telegraph, 7 April 1926).

One of 2 Farquharson we presently have in our gallery for sale.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
