In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
The level turns within its stand and can be completely removed by taking the pins out and opening up the holders.
It comes with its original mahogany and brass tripod which completely breaks down to fit in the same compact box as the level. I have never seen a tripod quite like it. The quality is superb and it is engineered incredibly well being made of solid turned mahogany and threaded brass screws and metal pointed feet to stick in the ground. Each brass cap is numbered in small punched dots 1, 2 or 3 to make assembly easier. This has later been gone over with small dots of white paint. It could easily be a military item although there are no marks.
The level and the tripod come with the original fitted mahogany box which has a gorgeous aged patina and lots of signs of wear and use. There is an empty section in the box, possibly for a cleaning rag, tape measure or maps. There is a split in the back corner of the box and the lid doesn't shut flush but it is still a great box and displays very nicely.
It truly is a stunning instrument and it is in excellent condition. The brass has been lightly polished and the parts cleaned and lubricated. The lenses are undamaged and produce a clear image with the cross lines also in place. The image is inverted as was the case on these old levels. I'm sure the lenses would benefit from a light clean and it is being sold as a decorative / collector's item rather than an accurate scientific instrument. The tripod is in good condition with no damages or breaks and a nice aged patina.
