Large Antique Brass Telescope on Tripod by Aitchison & Co

1900 - 1920
Description

A superb antique telescope on its original wooden tripod. It was made by "Aitchison & Co. 428 Strand & Branches" and dates to the late 1800s / early 1900s. The telescope is made of brass and has a single large tube with an extendable eyepiece tube which focuses the telescope using the knob on the side.

The telescope sits atop a wooden tripod, specially made for the telescope with an adjustable brass pole to ensure the telescope is the right height. The telescope has a fixing bracket on the bottom of the tube which swivels and turns on a mount - allowing the telescope to completely turn and move up and down on the stand.

Both the telescope and stand are in excellent condition. The brass has been polished to a high standard and the wood has been cleaned and waxed and they display beautifully - a real statement piece. The telescope has clearly been well looked after and there are no major damages, it has only suffered some minor dinks and small knocks to the tube. The lenses are undamaged and produce a clear and crisp image with an incredible range. Please bare in mind the telescope is 100 years old and the lenses will not be like new. The optics are some of the best I have seen on a telescope of this age but please don't expect them to be absolutely perfect as there are some small specks of dirt but it is perfectly useable.

Approximate Measurements :

Diameter of Lens : 3" (8cm)

Length of Telescope : 46" (117cm) / 50" (127cm) extended

Minimum Height : 55" (140cm)

Maximum Height : 66" (168cm)

It is a truly stunning piece that anybody would be proud to use and display. The best description I can give comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions at all please ask.
