A Fine Late 17th-early 18th Century Ripple Molded Mirror

17th century
Description

A fine late 17th-early 18th Century ripple molded and ebonised mirror. Ripple moldings were purportedly first created in Germany in the early 17th century for frames and furniture. The ripple devices for making these moldings all use a pattern and follower system to duplicate a waveform onto a stock piece. A well known engraving and description can be found in Joseph Moxon’s Mechanick Exercises of 1678–80. These types of mirrors are popularly associated with Dutch baroque frames, especially when executed in ebony and ebonised fruitwoods such as this one. The frame has had some old repairs and has some ware and chips and there has also been a small amount of worm damage to the back boards, all commiserate with age. however the overall condition is excellent.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
