Here we see one of the earliest of the so-called 'shield' design rugs from the Shirvan region, eastern Caucasus, dating to the early 19th century. The yellow field is rare and beautiful, and contains a myriad of symbolic shapes throughout - the dark-brown symbols having fairly heavy corrosion due to the iron mordant. Nevertheless, the rug is complete with evenly-low pile all over. Highly collectable.
