Atropos Antiques has dated this piece to the 1800s.
His design, choice of timber and veneers was impeccable and this fine instrument bears this out admirably.

A large and beautifully defined fan inlay to the round top gives way to a boxed long drop alcohol thermometer on silvered and engraved scale. At the mid point two oval fan inlays continue the theme. A cast brass bezel surrounds a finely engraved and silvered 8 inch dial. Set hand and reading hand are centred above a high lighted star engraving to the dial. The maker has engraved the dial, "chas aiano fecit". (charles aiano made me, rough translation). Another large and impressive fan inlay to the bottom of the instrument and a distinctive 'chevron' or 'dog tooth' line surrounds the whole carcass. As would be expected of an instrument of this quality the outer edge is cross banded all around.
The instrument has a serviced mercury tube within and works well.
All questions are welcome and I am able to deliver and set up the instrument if required.
