Large Boxed Antique English Commodity Scales in Mahogany & Brass C.1880

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

When you look at this superb set of Apothecary scales, it's hard to believe that it all dismantles and actually fits into the drawer below.

When putting these together, I have attached the pin to the scale .. see the photographs to see how this pin just slots in the top and secures the scales. The balance and pans are made from solid English brass, professionally polished to gleam. The balance is stamped with the V (crown) R for Victoria Regina (Queen Victorian), making these a true Victorian pair. They are also signed by the London manufacturer, Thurston and Sons, Leyton.

The set comes complete with a set of polished bell weights. The two brass pans when resting sit just above the top of the Mahogany base and when needed the lever in the centre is pushed down to allow the scales to do their job. .

Excellent condition and a good impressive size, the base measures 171/2" x 9 1/2"x 4 1/2" tall. When fully constructed, the scale towers 26 1/2" tall. Victorian in era dating to c.1880.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
