Hingstons of Wilton has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
An Antique Colonial hardwood iron bound mule chest, made in the first half of the 19th. century.

Imagine the arduous and dangerous journeys this chest would have been on, as it was transported around the Orient.
The chest has a lid that lifts to reveal a large open storage area and also a lidded compartment for storing smaller valuables.

Along the bottom of this, is a row of 3 drawers.
This has lovely blacksmith made iron fittings and corners, that give this such an attractive look.
Each corner has multiple corner straps, ending with arrow head designs.

The mule chest is finished all around and so it can be placed away from a wall.
Mule chests derive their name from the Mule, as it is neither a horse or donkey, hence a mule chest is neither a chest nor coffer.
