The objects were in a sense the luxury items of their time , but rather than wealth they represented the physical embodiment of the scholars intellectual curiosity and aesthetic taste.The rectangular low stand or table with a ''floating'' panel top and with inset panelled ends . The open-work frieze with ruyi motif carvings (symbolic of good fortune) and ''endless knot'' style frets to the corners.
