C19th ''Grand Tour'' souvenir bronze reduction of ''The Albani Vase'' , after the antique original.
Well-cast and richly patinated bronze copy of the ancient twin-handled krater vase , known as the Albani vase . The body cast in high relief with masks of bearded gods amongst drapery and lion-skins, together with crisp leaf detail and twin-handles modelled as intertwined vines. The whole standing upon a fluted circular socle .
The original discovered in Rome in the mid C18th during the excavation of a Villa sponsored by Cardinal Alessandro Albani , the great collector and patron of ancient art antiquities.
The ancient marble vase was thought to have stood outside the Temple of Bacchus.
In excellent original condition with a good consistent patination.
