Silver Pocket Watch, Berry, West Hartlepool, 1894

An antique silver pocket watch by G F Berry, West Hartlepool.

The watch has a key-wound movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed G F Berry, West Hartlepool, and it is protected by an inner cover.

As a note of interest, Mr Berry's name appeared in the “wreck report” for the British steamship Benton of Aberdeen which became stranded on the coast of Lapland in October 1898. He apparently had checked the three on-deck compasses in May of the same year. Thankfully the incident was not due to the compasses but the second officer who did not take the necessary measures when land was sighted by the look out man.

The watch itself measures 50mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the case backs for Chester 1894 with a maker's mark for the Coventry based case maker Albert Waterfall. The case is in good condition with just light surface marking, nothing serious at all.

The watch glass is in good condition.

The dial is in good condition.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.
