PIERRE JULES MENE (1810-1879), a leading member of the French 'animalier' movement, started work with his father, a metal turner, and by 1837 he was casting his own sculptures. He enjoyed great success as a sculptor and the quality of his work is comparable to the great Antoine Louis Barye (1796-1875) the most famous French animal sculptor of the 19th century.
