Handsome George III Oak Breakfront Dresser with Losenge Inlays C. 1800

19th century
Description

A beautiful George III oak dresser made by a skilled craftsman in c. 1800.

.

The dresser is very solid and robust and has a lovely rich naturally developed colour.

.

The three long oak drawers flanked by two large cupboards with fielded panels to the doors. The knob handles throughout are solid brass and either original or fitted in the original holes. Each drawer retains its inlaid ivory losenge shaped escutcheon and brass original lock. The top surface of the dresser comprises substantial and original oak boards with attractive wear and character and a lovely colour. All set on square stile original feet (professionally re-tipped by an inch or so on both back legs). Each stile inlaid with a losenge and the cornice of the dresser with losenge inlay also and original inlaid losenge escutcheons. The dresser and rack sit true and square and it is very solid, heavy and robust. Drawers and cupboard doors open smoothly and close properly and have original clean linings with dovetailed joints.

.

The oak rack with wide back boards and adze marks from the hand held tools that worked them. Attractive waterfall shape to the rack and it is fixed to the dresser base at two points in the shaped sleigh feet - so can be secured once in place. The substantial cornice with original iron hooks and three strong good shelves. Minor dings, marks and bruises consistent with age and use.

.

A very handsome Georgian oak dresser from a private home, minor faults as described but well cared for all of its life. Good proportions, not too tall, and very practical and usable.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
