Rare Antique Large Silver and Tortoise Shell "Matches" Box

Description

A rare example of a late Victorian matchbox holder made from English solid or sterling silver and fully hallmarked for London 1900 together with the makers initials W C for the famous silversmith William Comyns.

The top panel is inset with a wonderful piece of shiny tortoiseshell and topped with the cast silver word " Matches ".

The panels either side reveal the strike paper so can be used .. perfectly usable today.

A stunning piece and a good heavy example, a substantial size measuring 3" x 2" x 1 1/4" tall, and excellent condition.
