Ormolu and Sèvres Porcelain Boudoir Clock by Le Roy Et Fils, Paris

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1880 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A sumptuous boudoir clock, fine gilding on bronze and lovely turquoise Sèvres style porcelain. It is by the renown clock making firm of Le Roy et Fils and was probably made in Paris and retailed from their Bond Street shop. Porcelain is beautifully painted with floral swags, a village scene to the dial and a finely painted panel with a scene of a couple in a country setting.

The case is classical in style with acanthus columns, pineapple finials and a lion's mask with acanthus swags to the front. The ormolu has stunning, bright and clean gild.

The French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. The Le Roy et Fils mark is on the backplate. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. The rear door is glazed to allow the movement to be seen. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!

Established by Basile Charles Le Roy in 1785, the firm of Le Roy et Fils became a well-established and renowned clockmaker. Basile had been Napoleon's master clockmaker, and along with his son Charles-Louis, he worked for Princess Pauline and the Duke de Bourbon as well. Examples of the firm's work are included in all of the major world collections. The firm was located at the Palais Royale from 1785, the year of its founding, through the death of Charles-Louis at Versailles in 1865. There was also a London retail outlet located at 57 Bond street established in 1885.

Condition of the case is excellent, the gilding is beautifully clean and bright. The porcelain has no major chips or damage, the dial and scene panels are good but the over-glaze decoration is heavily worn on all the panels. The clock displays beautifully however as you can see below.
