This is an antique schools desk in elm, pitch pine and cedar by Geo. M. Hammer & Co. Ltd London dating to circa 1910.

Fine example in very good order throughout

Desirable patina and grain interest

Sliding desk unit for ease of access for the student

Fall opens on quality hinging to reveal voluminous storage within

Small up-stand and folding book rest to rear of desk unit

Original ink well cover engraved with the maker's name

To the rear of the desk a book rack for convenience

Shaped saddle seat slab raised on stout stiles

Gently dished backrest for comfort

Generously sized and suitable for ages from small child through to young adult

Rare to find in such good condition. Solid joints and construction, delivered waxed, polished and ready for the home.

Operating in the 19th and early 20th centuries, Hammer were an old English furnisher, in their words; 'Manufacturers of every description of school, institute, library, mission and church furniture'.

Based out of Crown Works, St. James' Road, Bermonsey, SE16 with showrooms on the first floor at 430, Strand London W.C., they were prolific manufacturers.

Highly acclaimed at several international shows winning a prize medal in London, 1867, silver medals in Paris 1878 and Sydney 1879 and a gold in Melbourne 1880.
