Rule of Portsmouth Georgian Period Mahogany Longcase Clock

18th century
Description

A small, well proportioned Georgian period Hampshire Longcase clock. A good quality 'London' mahogany case with figuring to the trunk door and base. An arched hood pediment surmounted by 2 original brass finials. Brass capped fluted hood and trunk side columns. A re-entrant moulded base panel. A 12" arched brass dial with silvered chapter ring. A strike/silent lever to the arch with seconds dial and date aperture. A fine quality 5-pillar mechanism striking the hours on a bell. Brass cased weights and flat rod pendulum.

This high quality London quality case and mechanism are often seem in Portsmouth as apprentice clockmakers seemed to move to this area.

James Rule of Portsmouth is recorded in Baillies 'Watchmakers and Clockmakers of The World' book as working before 1778. This example dates to circa 1770.
