Antique Longcase Clock

19th century
Description

A good quality Georgian mahogany longcase clock of slim proportions. A pagoda pediment surmounted by 3 brass finials. Flame mahogany veneers to the trunk door and chequered marquetry banding to the hood arch. A silvered dial with strike/silent to the arch. Engraved corners with date and seconds indicators. An 8-day duration mechanism striking the hours on a bell.

The Upjohn family of clockmakers of Exeter and London are well documented makers of quality clocks. John (1778-1848) is recorded in Ponsfords' 'Time in Exeter' book as working in Bell Hill, Exeter having moved from London. He supplied the Church clock for Holy Trinity, Exeter in 1820. A rare feature of the original makers label to the clock case.
