Description

THOMAS SIMSON of HERTFORD: a good quality late 18th century mahogany LONGCASE CLOCK in fine condition and in perfect working order.

Typical of good London "provincial" clocks of the period, the splendid mahogany case features brass-inlaid columns to the hood; a long trunk door flanked by brass-inlaid quartered columns; and a panelled base with double plinth.

The 8-day movement strikes hours on a bell with "Strike/Silent" control in the arch; subsidiary seconds dial; a silvered cartouche engraved with the signature and orginal blue steel hands. The upper spandrels feature delightful dolphins. Full working order and guaranteed for at least two years. 84ins (213cms) high.

***Thomas Simson was apprenticed in 1766 and worked in Hertford from 1775-1795.
